Types of Support

Foundation funds may be used to support a range of charitable activities, including but not limited to:

  • Short-term, emergency financial assistance to families experiencing unexpected crises that may impact student well-being or engagement

  • Assistance with basic needs such as food, housing stability, utilities, transportation, childcare related to a crisis, or other urgent needs

  • Payment for reasonable services that support students and families, including community outreach, engagement, translation, communications, and relationship-building activities

  • Support for programs, events, or initiatives that strengthen family connection to the school and increase understanding of educational opportunities at St. Paul City School

  • Essential administrative or operational expenses necessary to steward Foundation resources responsibly

Support provided by the Foundation is intended to be responsive and situational rather than ongoing financial aid, and all expenditures must align with the Foundation’s charitable purpose.

Accessing Support

Families do not apply directly to the Foundation for assistance. Support is accessed through designated school staff, such as Family Liaisons, who work directly with families to:

  • Understand the nature and urgency of a family’s needs

  • Determine whether the situation aligns with the Foundation’s purpose

  • Identify appropriate types and levels of support

  • Submit requests for assistance through established internal procedures

This approach ensures that support is provided equitably, relationally, and with respect for family dignity and confidentiality.

Approval and Disbursement

Requests for Foundation support are submitted through an internal request form completed by designated school staff (such as Family Liaisons) and reviewed by the Director of Finance & Operations and the Executive Director. The request form and related procedures are maintained separately and may be updated as needed to support responsible administration.

In reviewing requests, approvers are responsible for ensuring that:

  • Requests align with the Foundation’s charitable purpose and guidelines

  • The type and amount of assistance are appropriate to the circumstances

  • Funds are used responsibly and equitably

  • Adequate documentation and financial controls are maintained

The maximum amount of direct financial assistance available to any individual family is currently set at $400 per year, unless otherwise approved in exceptional circumstances consistent with the Foundation’s purpose.

Whenever possible, payments are made directly to vendors or service providers rather than to individuals.
